Last week, Ambassador MacNaughton spoke to the Economic Club of Washington, DC. In a conversation with David Rubenstein, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Chairman of the Carlyle Group, the Ambassador gave an overview of the U.S.-Canada economic, energy, and security relationships. The Ambassador explained how USMCA will benefit the North American economy and why Canada should have a permanent exemption to U.S. section 232 tariffs, with which the senior U.S. business audience agreed. Beyond the bilateral relationship, the discussion touched on Canada’s national sport, bilingualism, the best tourist destinations, and the Ambassador’s first encounter with a young Justin Trudeau. When asked what Americans should know about Canada, the Ambassador was clear “We want the United States to be successful because it benefits us economically … Your prosperity is important to our success too. We are joined at the hip.”
