In the Hirshhorn’s largest interactive technology exhibition to date, three major installations from Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s Pulse series come together for the artist’s DC debut. A Mexican Canadian artist known for straddling the line between art, technology, and design, Lozano-Hemmer fills the Museum’s entire Second Level with immersive environments that use heart-rate sensors to create kinetic and audiovisual experiences from visitors’ own biometric data. Over the course of six months, Pulse will animate the vital signs of hundreds of thousands of participants.

A cinematic meditation on humanity’s massive re-engineering of the planet, Anthropocene: The Human Epoch is a feature documentary narrated by Alicia Vikander. The film, directed by Canadians Jennifer Baichwal, Nicholas de Pencier and Edward Burtynsky, follows the research of an international body of scientists, the Anthropocene Working Group who, after nearly 10 years of research, argue that the Holocene Epoch gave way to the Anthropocene Epoch in the mid-twentieth century as a result of profound and lasting human changes to the Earth. The American-Ukrainian film, Anton, will play at the Jewish Film Festival near Dupont Circle, early this month. The film, which is based on the novel from the former Canadian Consular General to Denver, Dale Eisler, tells the story of the violence and persecution experienced in Ukraine in 1919. For Simon, a public relations manager at a major aerospace company, lying is a way of life, almost a raison d’être. His family isn’t fooled by his lies and have learned, somehow, to shut their eyes to his nonsense. But when Russian industrialists come to negotiate a contract that could save the struggling aircraft company where his brother also works, Simon’s behavior becomes an important issue. Fearing that one lie too many will make everything fall apart, his relatives serve him an ultimatum. The same evening, a strange cosmic event propels Simon into a parallel universe, where all his fabrications seem to have come true.
