Last week, the Senate overwhelmingly passed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement with strong bipartisan support, like the House of Representatives did in December. The President is expected to sign the legislation in the coming days, concluding the U.S. ratification process.
Following the Senate vote, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland reiterated that USMCA is excellent for Canadian jobs and for certainty in the Canadian economy. The successful negotiation of USMCA has been a team effort by Canadians from across the country. As the government has said, the implementing legislation will be a top priority when Parliament resumes later this month on January 27. The Government hopes all parliamentarians from all parties will support its swift passage.
USMCA is truly is a win-win-win for North America. Once fully implemented, it will build on NAFTA’s successes, creating more and better-paying jobs, protecting workers and the environment, and contributing to sustainable economic growth and communities.
We know we would not have gotten to this point without the dedicated work of Canada`s Consulates General across the United States, our partners in the business community, our Congressional champions, and countless others. We are grateful of the support and will continue to work together as we move through the Canadian process and beyond.
