When NBA Commissioner kicked off the NBA Finals in Toronto, he rightly said, “this is a homecoming of sorts.” And, when he presented the Larry O’Brien trophy to the Toronto Raptors last night, he reminded the world that basketball was invented by a Canadian, and that the NBA’s first-ever game was played in Toronto. That Canadian connection might be why this run by the Raptors pulled the whole country together – hoping to lift the “Drake Curse” – and Canadians all over the world joined in watching these amazing moments.
Here in the U.S., where people know the game best, Canadians gathered from coast to coast at watch parties in San Francisco, New York, Washington, and everywhere in between to see this multi-cultural, multi-talented team wear a city and a nation’s hopes on its shoulders. Through the wild ups and downs of the playoffs, and the painful injuries of some of the sport’s greatest stars, #WeTheNorth has become part of Canadian identity for fans across the country, and around the world, and fans of all ages were given a moment that they will remember forever.
Let’s Go Raptors!!!
