In January 2020, Canada and the U.S. announced the completion of the Canada-U.S. Joint Action Plan on Critical Minerals Collaboration. The Plan advances our mutual interest in strengthening supply chains for the critical minerals needed for important manufacturing sectors, and delivered on a June 2019 commitment by the Prime Minister of Canada and the President of the United States.
Canada’s Ambassador to the U.S. Kirsten Hillman met with Politico’s Luiza Savage, as part of their series on critical mineral supply chains, to discuss the agreement between the U.S. and Canada, and how the two countries can work together to facilitate access to these resources. She talked about this important and complex sector, from innovation and clean tech, to geopolitical dynamics and national security, and shared examples of how the Government of Canada and its mining industry are continually looking for ways to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to shrink mining’s environmental footprint.
