Washington, D.C. (June 9, 2017) – Canada’s Ambassador to the United States, David MacNaughton, is pleased to announce that on Saturday, June 10, the Embassy of Canada in Washington, D.C. will walk in the Capital Pride Parade, themed Unapologetically Proud. The Embassy of Canada, located at 501 Pennsylvania Avenue, will also fly the pride flag and light the Embassy’s rotunda pillars in pride colours from June 8-11.
As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation this July 1, 2017, we also reflect on historic steps taken for the equality of all Canadians. In 1982, the enactment of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms guaranteed equal rights for all. In 2005, the Civil Marriage Act protected marriage equality in all its forms. In 2016, Canada’s Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, appointed Member of Parliament Randy Boissonnault as the country’s first-ever special advisor on LGBTQ2 issues. Most recently, on June 8, Canada announced it will be the new co-chair of the Equal Rights Coalition, the first inter-governmental network formed to promote and protect the human rights of lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual, and intersex people around the world.
While politeness is often the Canadian mantra, the Embassy is Unapologetically Proud to represent our country’s values of inclusiveness, diversity, and respect in this year’s D.C Pride Parade.
